Childbirth can be one of the most amazing, rewarding, heart-opening experiences.  A woman goes through the challenging yet euphoric journey of labor, works with her baby, and together they emerge as a new creation.  Oxytocin levels will never be higher for that mom and baby then at the moment of birth.  This is birth how it is meant to be.

This piece is meant to be a response to all those “Why on earth would you not get an epidural/give birth outside a hospital/choose a midwife/etc” comments.

A huge thank you to my doula clients and midwife Sarah Stone at Mountain Midwifery Center for allowing me to use their birth photos as reference!  It was such an honor to be at their birth.

  1. This is my *favorite*. I have always loved it, and oddly it looks like last night to me…the mom/dad appear just as they did and the mw looks just like me…and no one else was there, and mama…her face *glowed* in amazement like this! Thanks for capturing what few of us see. Love to you-kate

    • Oh my goodness. Kate! I was looking you up to find your email address and stumbled across this post as one of the top google finds. As I looked at the date and read what you wrote, I realized the “last night” you are referring to is when I have birth to Sylas!! This is exactly what I imagine that moment to have looked like and is so strangely exactly how I picture it in my mind to this day. And like you said, it was just the 3 of us so there are no pictures. *This* will now be my picture!! Thank you for being a wonderful midwive!

      • Aww that’s so great! 🙂. Thanks for your print order. I also have pendants with this piece on it in my Etsy shop if you’re interested 🙂

  2. It’s a VERY good home Amy…Kate is my AMAZING midwife and she really does look like the one in this piece. I’m so excited to see the original hanging at Kate’s.
