“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you” ~ Jeremiah 1:5
Sue Kouma Johnson began practicing art early and by second grade she “knew” she was an artist. Art has always been a part of her life, and she integrates it with her faith by doing religious subjects and non-religious subjects informed by her belief in beauty and the Beautiful One, whom she loves, who has made all things.
Although she excelled in figure sculpture in art school, her love of color and imagery caused her to delve into painting and printmaking, which, through her interest in artists like Matisse, Chagall, and early Christian iconographers, took on an abstract expressionist style blended with eastern iconography. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from UNL in 1986. After twenty-five years, it is an almost unconscious work of the heart that comes forth in Sue’s art. The early influences are still there but the style has taken on a life of its own.
Sue is wife to John Johnson and mother to five children and lives in Lincoln, Nebraska. As the children got older she was able to re-launch her art career. Over the years, she has completed numerous painting commissions and shown her work in numerous shows and galleries. Sue is available for drawing, painting and sculpture commissions and may be reached by phone or e-mail. You can visit her on Facebook, Sue Kouma Johnson, or at her website.
