This is the fourth piece in my “Seasons” series representing four seasons of womanhood.  Winter Solstice represents mature womanhood, or the “crone.”  She represents the wisdom that comes from age.  For this piece I was inspired hiking through a redwood grove.  Redwoods are amazing organisms.  They are actually a network of trees stemming from one ancestral, ancient parent who can easily be 2,000 years old and over 300 feet tall.  As you can see in this piece the roots weave together and then come upwards towards the sky as new trees.  Redwoods are also amazing because their canopy can actually “catch” rain and make their own precipitation.  They are extremely resistant to insects, fire, and rot.

In this piece you see the grandmother calling deep into the earth, sharing her wisdom, and creating new life from her roots.

This piece also uses metallic paint to give an ethereal glow, shown here:

This is the second piece in my “Seasons” series representing four seasons of womanhood.  Summer solstice, the journey to becoming a mother, with a warm summer glow through the branches.  In the original piece has bright gold metallic paint that shines (which is difficult to capture in the artwork scan).  This piece is truly luminous!  One of my favorites.

Here you can almost see the glow:

This is the first in my “Seasons” series representing four seasons of womanhood.  Springtime (primavera) is represented by the maiden on the verge of menarche and the beginning of womanhood.  Her arms are decorated and blessed by henna, the basket represents bounty.  Woven into the henna is the symbol “Sankofa” which represents wisdom and reaching to the past to gain insight and build the future.  The owl signifies the ancestral wisdom of womanhood whispering in her ear.  The beehive signifies the community of woman she is being birthed into.

This was inspired by a quote from a Rumi poem…

“And don’t think the garden loses its ecstasy in winter.
It’s quiet, but the roots are down there, riotous.”

  Form Is Ecstatic

There is a shimmering excitement in
being sentient and shaped. The

caravan master sees his camels lost
in it, nose to tail, as he himself is,

his friend, and the stranger coming
toward them.  A gardener watches the

sky break into song, cloud wobbly with
what it is.  Bud, thorn, the same.

Wind, water, wandering this essential
state.  Fire, ground, gone.  That’s

how it is with the outside.  Form
is ecstatic.  Now imagine the inner:

soul, intelligence, the secret worlds!
And don’t think the garden loses its

ecstasy in winter.  It’s quiet, but
the roots are down there riotous.

If someone bumps you in the street,
don’t be angry.  Everyone careens

about in this surprise.  Respond in
kind.  Let the knots untie, turbans

be given away.  Someone drunk on this
could drink a donkeyload a night.

Believer, unbeliever, cynic, lover,
all combine in the spirit-form we are,

but no one yet is awake like Shams.

Gimokodan is the underworld in the lore of the Philippine Islands. At the entrance to Gimokodan is the Black River in which souls bathe to eradicate sadness of human life. There is a goddess there with many breasts nurtures and takes care of the spirits of those who died young until they can be reunited with their parents.

I do this piece for several of my friends who have had to let go of their children too soon.  So much love to Bram, Noah, and Isa.

Rumina is a Roman Goddess of Breastfeeding and Women, who causes the milk to flow. Her name is related to an old Latin word for breast, rumis or ruma, and translates to “the Nourisher”, “She Who Breastfeeds” or “Mother’s Breast”. Rumina was the protectress of all nursing young, human and animal both.  Learn more about Rumina here.
